Welcome to the Church History Library study guide for the Journal History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

What is the Journal History?

The Journal History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereafter referred to as the Journal History or the Journal History of the Church) is a day by day history of the Church from 1830-present day taken mostly from newspapers, but also from some minutes and diary entries. It is arranged by date, with the page numbers restarting with each date.

Why use the Journal History?

The Journal History covers the entire history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a result it contains valuable historical and biographical data. It may contain information about when a pioneer arrived in Utah, when a bishop was called, or when a ward or stake was organized.

Why use this guide?

There are multiple indexes and multiple formats for this resource and sometimes this can be confusing. Please use the tabs at the top of this guide to learn more about the Journal History of the Church.

Where to find the Journal History?

The Journal History through 1923, as well as the index for 1830 to 1972, has been digitized and is available online at the Church History Library website.
